Statement of Inquiry: Knowledge of the Basic Principles and Elements of Design help us understand and compose aesthetically pleasing Art.

 

In this unit, students are formally introduced to the Elements and Principles of Design, having some prior knowledge and exposure in the PYP. The Elements and Principles of Design are fundamental to creating and analysing visual artwork. Students will focus on craftsmanship and how presentation needs to be considered when creating aesthetically pleasing artwork. Using their newly acquired knowledge and creative thinking skills, students will be able to discuss, recognise, generate original ideas and create an Accordion book containing 14 original mixed media pages.

Skills: Creative thinking skills, composition skills

Statement Of Inquiry: Our personal and cultural beliefs can be communicated through purposeful and aesthetic presentation of everyday objects.

In this unit, students inquire into how identities and relationships can be communicated through purposeful presentation and composition by looking at the Still Life genre. Students analysed Early and Contemporary Still life paintings, developing their meaning-making skills, discussing the similarities, differences and how Still Life paintings have evolved through time. Students developed their observational drawing skills and shading techniques to develop their own graphite Still Life drawings with the intention of communicating to an audience their identity, beliefs and culture.
