I have the privilege to be able to share my passion for the arts with students in a joyful learning environment; where students feel free to explore the world of art, and have the autonomy to express themselves in a creative and unique way.
Teaching & Learning In My Classroom
I believe that teaching should be inspiring, and learning should be joyful.
All my units and tasks are inquiry- and project-based, allowing students to take ownership of their learning and the creative process as they develop as artists. In my art classes, students have the autonomy to explore, create, and question themselves and the world around them. I take on the role of a facilitator, sharing my knowledge and skills and supporting students in their learning. My classes consist of both theory and practical activities that help students develop artistic knowledge, understand concepts, and develop a wide range of skills and techniques through experimentation with different media.
Growth As Artists
As they progress, students begin to explore more conceptual ideas and develop their art analysis and conceptual skills. Art is all about experimentation and taking risks. Students are taught how to explore ideas in their process journals and through digital journals. Students also learn to appraise their work through guided critiques and reflections.As an artist and an educator of colour, I believe it is important to teach students about master practitioners and traditional art forms, but I also aim to introduce students to contemporary artists and artists of colour or minorities (BIPOC) to extend student perspectives and experiences. I believe it is important to diversify the content taught so that all students see their backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs reflected in what they are learning, and to foster international-mindedness.
Curriculum Development
Curriculum and resource development are among my key strengths. I develop units with the end in mind, using backward planning and active collaboration with my Art department to create a clear progression of learning. My units help MYP and middle-school students build the confidence, knowledge and independence needed to succeed in Visual Arts at DP and high-school level. Students develop strong foundations in observational drawing, colour mixing and shading, alongside an understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. I also create accessible resources that support inquiry, experimentation, reflection and increasingly independent art-making.
Celebrating the Arts
I believe the arts should be celebrated with students and the community. All artworks created throughout the year are exhibited in an annual MYP Visual Arts Exhibition showcasing all students' artwork. Students enjoy the process of curating and organizing an exhibition space for their friends and families.
